Built in 1937 under the name Teatro del Sole, it was then torn down and rebuilt as the New Theatre (1816-18) with a opening curtain, designed in a neoclassical style, by Angelo Monticelli. The opening was held in 1855 with a performance of "La gazza ladra" directed by Rossini.
